A one-hour drive through the countryside of Busan brings you to the Tongdosa Temple, established in AD 646. Its main building is designated a National Treasure. The temple functions as a museum because of the numerous relics inside -- 19 local treasures and 794 local cultural properties. In place of the Buddha statue, the Geumgang Stairs behind the main building preserve the shrines of Buddha. Take in the beautiful view of Mt Chiseosan from the temple.
Centuries-old pine trees lined the entrance to the Ilju Gate. A small drum (used when praying in front of a Buddha figure) and bell, the sunset, the pond and the rocks and waterfalls behind the temple are collectively called the Eight Famous Sceneries of Tongdosa Temple.
Before returning to the ship, you'll stop at the Bujeon Market -- one of the wholesale markets frequented by the locals in Busan.
Please note: Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes (mandatory). Slip-on shoes are not allowed.
