Depart the pier on a panoramic drive into the desert to see the wild horses of the Namib.
It is not known how long feral horses have lived in this area that covers approximately 135 square miles, but locals claim they have been here since 'German times' and are descendants of the horses of the German Schutztruppe. As there are no actual written records of their provenance, their true origin remains unclear, but there are, of course, numerous theories -- both plausible and improbable.
Viewing the wild horses in this fantastic getaway location is a must for any traveler looking for the next extraordinary experience. At the Garub watering hole, a roofed observation hide allows you to closely view these resilient animals that have adapted to the extreme conditions of the Namib Desert. In addition to the horses, many other species use the watering hole, including native wildlife such as the elusive gemsbok, springbok and ostriches. Gemsbok usually move away from the waterhole when the horses approach and vice versa, but occasionally both species drink at the same time.
After you've spent a few minutes observing these magnificent creatures, a wild-horses specialist will chat with you about the animals and how (s)he believes they came to roam in this area. You will also learn a great deal about the Namib Desert and the surrounding area.
After this eventful day in the Namib, it's time to head back to the pier in Lüderitz.
