Your half-day tour begins with a panoramic drive by motorcoach along the Embarcadero and across the Golden Gate Bridge. This bridge is possibly the most beautiful -- and certainly the most photographed -- bridge in the world. Often half-veiled by the city's trademark rolling fog, San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge spans tidal currents and withstands ocean waves and battering winds to connect the City by the Bay with the Redwood Empire to the north. You'll pause at Vista Point to take photos. Weather permitting, take in sweeping views of San Francisco Bay and the city skyline, as well as Alcatraz, Angel Island and Yerba Buena Island, the islands of San Francisco Bay, Berkeley, Oakland and downtown San Francisco.
In the downtown core, watch for Fisherman's Wharf -- home to sidewalk seafood vendors, souvenir shops, and other attractions.
You'll make your way to Alcatraz ferry landing, where you'll board the boat to Alcatraz Island.A National Park Ranger provides an introduction to the infamous Alcatraz Prison. Alcatraz Island became a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility in 1934. During the 29 years it was in use, the jail held such notable criminals as mobster kingpin Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud (the Birdman of Alcatraz) and George 'Machine Gun' Kelly. It has also been the setting for many films such as The Rock with Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage, Escape from Alcatraz with Clint Eastwood and The Birdman of Alcatraz with Burt Lancaster.
A self-guided audio tour leads you through the jail's facilities. You'll experience the small cells previously inhabited by these very characters, and have an opportunity to snap a few photos and view a documentary on the history of Alcatraz.
At the conclusion of the tour, you'll take the ferry back to Alcatraz Landing, located on the next pier to your ship.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Alcatraz can be congested. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair. The tour is non-refundable unless cancelled 10 days prior to the call at San Francisco.
