Travel north from Ullapool through undulating coastal scenery and the stunning Scottish Highland landscape. Before you looms the impressive bulk of Stac Pollaidh -- one of Scotland's most distinctive mountains, standing aloof and proud.
At Knockan, step inside the Visitor Center to learn about the region's geology; then set out on a one-hour circular walk of almost a mile along Knockan Crag. The views from the clifftop path northward over the Coigach Peninsula and its mountains is absolutely breathtaking.
Back on the coach, turn north again and head through a major part of Scotland's new European Geopark.
You will see the imposing Ben More Assynt mountain, and stop for photos at the ancient ruins of Ardvreck Castle. The three-story tower here was built by the MacLeods of Assynt in the 1500s. In 1650, James Graham, Marquis of Montrose was imprisoned in the castle after his defeat at the Battle of Carbisdale. He was eventually hanged in Edinburgh.
Set among the spectacular scenery of Assynt, Lochinver itself is a busy little fishing port with an active fish market. There is a range of retailers here. You have some free time to explore before returning to Ullapool.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes.
