Travel by coach along the southern coast of Jersey to explore areas associated with the German occupation of the island during World War II.
With its commanding views, it's hardly surprising that Noirmont was one of the spots most heavily fortified by the Germans. See the command bunker and a number of strategically-located gun emplacements.
Explore the Jersey war tunnels and underground hospital, largely constructed by forced labor. Thousands of POWs from Russia were brought to Jerse, under terrible conditions, to build this extensive complex deep into the hillside within St Peter's Valley. You'll be amazed at the engineering genius on display here. Notice how the tunnels were excavated on a slope so that they would drain naturally. This kept them free of condensation and suitable for storing ammunition. The tunnels house many remaining artifacts, including the boiler room, operating theater, telephone exchange and general stores. Some of the unfinished tunnels can be explored as well.
Afterward, you will have approximately 30 minutes at the Visitor Center. Spend some quiet time in the Garden of Reflection -- a memorial and a vibrant expression of life during the five years of Jersey's occupation.
Please note: The tunnels are quite cool; bring a sweater or jacket. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The tunnels are quite cool; bring a sweater or jacket. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
