Travel into Dartmoor National Park -- a peaceful area of great beauty located to the north of Plymouth. Heather, bracken and gorse, bogs, stone walls and granite tors are just a few of the interesting features of Dartmoor. Open vistas stretch across to the skyline as the road crosses undulating terrain.
You will also drive through areas of open countryside, passing delightful small towns. Stop at the High Moorland Visitor Centre in the heart of the Dartmoor National Park, where you will learn about the region from the interpretive center.
At one of the area's tearooms or country hotels, you will pause to enjoy a Devonshire Cream Tea. Here in the southwest of England, Devon residents claim that all other versions of a cream tea are inferior to their own. The essential ingredient is Devonshire clotted cream, which comes from local Jersey cattle. The origins of clotted cream are lost in the depths of history, although it is known that monks were making butter from clotted cream in the early 14th century. The cream is spread thickly on freshly baked scones, with lashings of homemade jam -- a seductive, delicious treat.
