Did you know that La Gomera was a port of call on Christopher Columbus' cruise too? You're following in the footsteps of the great explorer today as you discover the island from the perspective of a total newcomer.
Enjoy the island's stunning variety of beautiful landscape as your coach travels from the port to the center of San Sebastián town -- the capital of La Gomera. Set out on foot to view the most interesting buildings here, beginning with La Casa de Colón. This is Columbus' own house, where he spent quite a bit of time before leaving Europe to accidentally 'discover' America while looking for India.
The oldest church on the island -- Iglesia de la Asunción -- is where Columbus and his crew attended mass before sailing. See El Pozo de Aguada -- the well where Columbus collected water for his long journey and stop at the Torre del Conde -- the Count's Tower -- built to protect the citizens from pirates.
Taking the road south out of town, you'll stop in La Degollada de Peraza for a marvelous panoramic view.
Continue to the famous Natural Monument of Los Roques located within Garajonay National Park. This is a spectacular example of volcanic up-thrusts eroded over time and offers panoramic views of southern La Gomera. Before returning to San Sebastián for a refreshment, stop briefly at the Mirador El Rejo, with vistas over the Hermigua Valley and the neighboring island of Tenerife, including impressive Mount Teide.
