Nafplion is one of Greece's prettiest towns. Its setting is dominated by the towering Palamidi Fortress and the narrow streets of the Old Town are filled with elegant Venetian houses and graceful neo-Classical mansions.
Your walking tour begins at the pier as you marvel at the beautiful neo-Classical buildings lining the port.
You're headed to Kapodistriou Square and the park of the same name. Dedicated to the memory of the first governor of Greece, the park features a statue of Kolokotronis. This statesman was known as the Grand Old Man of the Morea, as he was the leader of the Greeks during the War of Independence. It was he who besieged the Turkish occupied Palamidi citadel for 15 months before it was finally surrendered.
See the beloved Palamidi Fortress in the background, and across the way is the current Town Hall building -- originally housing the very first high school in Greece.
Continuing through back streets not normally seen by visitors, you will find the Old Catholic Church and, just below it, the Church of Agios Spyridon built in 1702.
The worry beads you see everywhere in Greece have a museum dedicated to them in Náfplion -- step inside the Museum of Komboloi to learn of their origin.
Next, proceed through the popular Syntagma Square (Constitution Square), to visit the spectacular display of folk costumes and traditional textile-producing techniques at the Popular Art Museum -- winner of the 1981 European Museum of the year award.
