Begin your tour with a panoramic drive to Marseille, with sightseeing along the way. You will travel via the J.F. Kennedy Corniche road, which follows the natural contours of the coastline and offers lovely views of offshore islands dominated by the surrounding massif.
You'll drive up the La Garde hill to the magnificent Notre Dame de la Garde Cathedral, built in the mid-19th century in Roman-Byzantine style. Those who would like to climb about 160 steps will appreciate a 360-degree panoramic view of Marseille from the top. If you don't wish to climb, you will still have a photo opportunity from this wonderful viewpoint.
At the Old Port, discover the origins of Marseille which date back to the heyday of the Greek Empire. Always seeking new territory, the very famous and very competent Phocaean navigators from the Eastern Aegean were attracted to this superb site and founded the town of Massalia in 600 BC. Massalia became one of the major trading ports of the ancient world. Today, the economy of Marseille is still closely linked to its commercial port, which is the foremost in France. Enjoy some free time to browse in the Old Port area. You will also have time to purchase lunch (at your own expense).
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Participants must climb 160+ steps to reach the Basilica. If you do not wish to climb, you can remain at the viewpoint below. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Flash photography and video cameras are not permitted in the cathedral. Modest attire is required for visiting churches or cathedrals; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered; shorts and capri-length pants are not allowed.
