Set out with your guide on a walking tour of Antalya—a popular port and resort city. It was first settled in the 2nd century BC. Your tour starts at the Fluted Minaret, part of a 13th-century Seljuk mosque complex, and now an iconic landmark of the city. In the Old Town, you will appreciate the ancient ambience, which has remained largely unchanged for centuries. Careful restoration and conservation has maintained the original appearance of many of the fine buildings that line the cobblestone streets. The walls you see surrounding Antalya were built in the Hellenistic period but enlarged and restored by the Romans and the Byzantines, attesting to Antalya's long history of continuous (albeit varied) occupation. You will walk to the massive and impressive Hadrian's Gate, which was built to commemorate the Emperor Hadrian's visit to the city in AD 130. Made of marble and originally two stories high, the gate is flanked by three arched entranceways separated by piers with Corinthian columns. The two towers flanking the gate date from the 2nd century BC, and add gloriously to its imposing appearance. A little further on, you approach the Truncated Minaret. Originally a Roman temple, this structure changed with the times, becoming a Byzantine church in the 5th century and a mosque in the 13th century. Your walking tour of the city of Antalya ends at the Hidirilik Kulesi, a 2nd-century round tower. Next, continue to the Archaeological Museum. Spellbinding displays hold an amazing variety of collections. The Hall of Emperors is one of the museum's most impressive wings, boasting magnificent displays of classical art, including statues of the Greek gods and the Emperors Hadrian and Septimus Serverus and their mistresses.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes.
