Today, you'll have the rare opportunity to delve into the spiritual tranquility of an ancient monastery before savoring the distinct flavors of locally produced Robola wine -- an experience that beautifully melds the island's rich history with its celebrated viticultural traditions.
The Monastery of St Andrew is famous for housing a bizarre relic -- the locals here claim that it is the sole of St Andrew's right foot. During the 1953 earthquake, the whitewashed covering of the inside of the church was loosened and revealed frescoes dating back to the 13th and 17th centuries. These are now considered to be the island's prime artistic treasure.
Next, visit the Robola Winery and gain insight into the production methods of the famous and rare Robola wine made from a local species of grape, which comes in red, white, and sweet Muscat.
On the way to Kourkoumelata village, you'll stop for photos at the Castle of St George. Kourkoumelata was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1953. A wealthy local citizen financed the whole village to be reconstructed in neo-Classical style. Here you will wander through the village and admire the sweeping views of the sea below before you return to Argostolion.
