Trinidad’s “little sister” will charm you. After first attracting the Dutch, the island began a 150-year long game of imperial musical chairs also involving colonial occupation by the British and the French. The capital Scarborough is a useful deep water port on the island’s south side. The town’s House of Assembly is an outstanding example of Georgian architecture. The ruins of Fort King George, which once commanded the high ground over the harbor, makes a good spot for an overview. An appealing side trip is a visit to the multiple chutes of Argyle Waterfall near the cacao plantations around Roxborough. Pigeon Point is undoubtedly the most popular of the island’s beaches, but Englishman’s Bay is less crowded and rapturously beautiful.
