This off-the-beaten-track active adventure explores one of New Zealand's least-visited areas: the rugged hill country of the Southern Alps. It's a stunning region that stands in dramatic contrast to the flat Canterbury Plains that surround Christchurch.
From the port of Lyttelton, journey across the fertile Canterbury Plains to Springfield. On the banks of the spectacular Waimakariri River Gorge, board a Hamiltonjet boat which will take you on a thrilling and spectacular scenic ride deep into the heart of the Waimakariri Gorge, skimming over water at times only inches deep.
You're headed to Rubicon Station (a farm) where you will enjoy a delicious buffet lunch.
Then, an off-road4x4 minibus takes you on a scenic drive through Rubicon and Mt. Torlesse Stations (farms). Experience the thrill of off-roading as both of these private high-country stations have no public access. Take advantage of the numerous stops for photos and to appreciate the spectacular views of river gorges, rugged high country and the jagged peaks of the Southern Alps as well as views across the Canterbury Plains. You'll learn about the colorful history, the geology and day-to-day farming of these impressive stations.
Re-board your tour vehicle for the relaxing return journey along the Great Alpine Highway and across the Canterbury Plains back to Lyttelton.
