The Sanriku Coastline Geopark extends for about 185 miles, spanning three prefectures. The cliffs and ocean offer wonderful views created 500 million years ago and wear their age incredibly well.
Depart the pier for a scenic 1.75-hour drive to the Tanohata Train Station. Here, hop aboard for a 45-minute train ride on the Sanriku Railway -- a private railway that runs along the Sanriku Coastline. From the train, you're treated to stunning views of this rugged and beautiful stretch. The 2011 tsunami significantly damaged the railway; its return to operation is recognized as a symbol of a big step toward recovery and was celebrated by Japanese people nationwide. Enjoy a boxed lunch on board in typical Japanese travel style with a special seafood ekiben -- literary meaning "train station lunch box." Each area or station sells its own custom ekiben featuring traditional local cuisine or ingredients.
After your train ride, drive to Kitayamasaki Cliffs -- one of the most impressive landscapes of the Rikuchu Coast. Here, 650-foot cliffs stretch across five miles of coastline. At the Visitor Center, see interpretive displays describing the flora and fauna of the area as well as the geological history of the cliffs. Stroll the promenade and take in the breathtaking views from the observation deck before returning to the pier in Miyako.
Please note:
On the Sanriku Railway, you will travel between Tanohata and Kuji stations, vice versa. There will be approximately 50 steps at the station, and it may be necessary to cross to the opposite platform. Lunch is a boxed seafood lunch; no substitutions are available. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring local currency, as some vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day. In case the Sanriku Railway is suspended due to weather conditions, the tour will continue by motor coach. If inclement weather prevents visiting the Kitayamasaki Cliffs or requires a shorter stay, the Unosu Cliffs or a similar location will be substituted, depending on the weather. Tour sequence may vary.
