Head south of Stornoway along wonderfully scenic roads to the Isle of Harris. The narrow road winds around lochs to a series of stunning beaches. Among these is Horgabost Beach, whose enticing expanse of bleached white sand fills the entire bay, washed by turquoise sea and backed by steep dunes.
The drive leads to Rodel, where you will visit St Clement's Church. This fine 16th-century church was built by the eighth chief MacLeod of Dunvegan and Harris. It fell into disuse after the Reformation in 1560 but was extensively repaired 300 years later. The church is the grandest medieval building in the Western Isles, housing the tomb of its founder and the isles' finest collection of medieval sculpture. Its most striking aspect is its tower, built on a rocky outcropping and accessed via a dark stone staircase and a series of wooden ladders to the upper floors.
After a simple lunch of soup and sandwiches, visit the Harris Tweed shop, purveyors of the most desirable woolen textiles in the world. Harris Tweed is produced in the Outer Hebrides, woven on hand looms in the weavers' own homes since the 1800s -- it's the original WFH industry.
Enjoy some free time in Tarbert before you return to the ship in Stornoway.
Please note: Tour requires approximately one mile of walking at guests' discretion. Suitable for guests using a wheelchair with a companion to assist. Participants must be able to climb a few steps to board the motorcoach.
