Depart the pier by motorcoach for a panoramic drive by freeway to Breendonk -- a former Belgian army base that became a Nazi transit camp in September 1940.
The camp earned a gruesome reputation during World War II as an Auffanglager -- a prison used as an intake camp mainly for political prisoners -- and a Durchgangslager -- a transit camp. From September 1940 to August 1944, the SIPO-SD, the SS police, processed about 3,600 people of some 20 different nationalities here at Breendonk. Most were deported over time to other camps: Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Dora, Mauthausen, Sachsenhausen, and Vught. Reichsfeindliche Elementen (Enemies of the Reich) awaited their deportation abroad.
Explore the camp and contemplate its history with your guide, who can answer your many questions.
