garajonay national park
"laurel forest covers some 70% of this park, situated in the middle of the island of la gomera in the canary islands archipelago. the presence of springs and numerous streams assures a lush vegetation resembling that of the tertiary, which, due to climatic changes, has largely disappeared from southern europe.
set out by coach from the port of san sebastian heading for garajonay national park. this is a landscape of slopes clad in subtropical laurel forest, surprising rocky outcroppings, and the garajonay formation itself -- a spur and plateau that rises to 4,869 feet above sea level. creepers, vines, rivers and ferns make up a lush understory.
your walk will begin at el pajarito, taking you through the laurisilva forest to the garajonay formation. hike up to be rewarded with views sweeping from across the park, la gomera and the neighboring islands of tenerife and la palma. conditions permitting, you will see mt teide on tenerife.
follow a watercourse until you reach the small chapel of lourdes. the last part of the walk is uphill again and offers glimpses through the forest down to the village of el cedro.
this is a wonderful hike in the great outdoors for reasonably fit nature-lovers.
please note: wear sturdy walking shoes. the hike is approximately five miles round trip. please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking, as the walk is uphill over unpaved hiking tracks.
