Mount Argentario is a beautifully preserved promontory where the environment melts with history. There are many holiday villas and hotels in Southern Tuscany, as the area offers many outdoor opportunities not only in summer, but Argentario is also popular throughout the year. This active tour is both panoramic and interesting: you will learn the history behind Monte Argentario and its region, while enjoying beautiful views!
Your hiking will start in Porto Ercole, a short drive from the pier. Some of the scenic view from a vantage point will be: la Feniglia Nature Reserve, the Orbetello lagoon and some of the historical heritage in Porto Ercole - such as the Spanich fortress. The Spanish Presidios were very important to control the territory and military and commercial activities. The fortresses you will admire today were able to keep eyes on the coastline and on the watchtowers scattered on the rocky mountain.
For half the trail, your will climb to Forte Filippo, one of the Spanish strongholds in the 15th and 16th century, from where Forte Caterina can be admired as well as the Feniglia strip of land on the Eastern side of the nature reserve. The second part is a pleasant stroll to the Rocca, passing through the village, with some stops to admire ancient buildings and the Thyrrenean coastline. Return coach transfer included from Porto Santo Stefano. Scenic will be the word today!
