The Strait of Bonifacio is a narrow, picturesque waterway between the large islands of Corsica to the north and Sardinia to the south. It separates the Tyrrhenian Sea from the Sea of Sardinia in the Western Mediterranean. The strait is about 7 miles/11 km wide at the narrowest point, adjacent to the clifftop town of Bonifacio on Corsica. There are a number of islands in the strait and variable currents and winds require pilotage for ships carrying dangerous cargos and have given it a daunting reputation among yachtsmen.
