Your day begins with a drive inland to the countryside. Cross the fertile Campidano Plain, passing through cornfields, vineyards, and the village of Villamar. You may catch a glimpse of mural-covered houses illustrating everyday life in Sardinia.
Your destination is Barumini -- a small village situated in the center of Sardinia. It is home to the island's most important archaeological site -- the megalithic Nuraghic complex of Su Nuraxi. This site was rediscovered in 1950. It consists of circular defensive towers in the form of truncated cones built of stone, with corbel-vaulted internal chambers. Historians believe the fortification was strengthened around 500 BC when the Nuraghic Civilization became aware of the Carthaginian threat. This is the finest and most complete example of prehistoric architecture on the island.
Back in Cagliari, take a panoramic drive through the city center, past the Basilica Bonaria, and up Mount Urpino for a view from the top.
