San Sebastian, the beautiful Pearl of the Sea, is a charming Belle Epoque resort built around a crescent-shaped bay. The city was once very formal and was made popular in 1886 by Queen Regent Maria Cristina. Today, it is a relaxed, family-style resort, which also hosts the International Film Festival every September.
On a panoramic drive through the modern part of the city, you'll see several buildings of architectural and historical interest, including the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd and the Town Hall, the Palace and Gardens of Miramar, the theatre, and the luxury hotel named after the Queen.
From the Mount Igeldo viewpoint, admire San Sebastian's picture-postcard setting.
In the Old Town you will discover a city full of character – the perfect place for strolling amid shops, bars, restaurants and squares, and the Church of San Vicente. You will have approximately 1½ hours of free time in San Sebastian to purchase lunch (at your own expense).
Before you head back to Bilbão, your tour is rounded off with a short visit to Hondarribia, near the French border. This delightful town is divided into two parts. The upper town is the medieval district where small alleyways contain old houses embellished with carved eaves and wonderful balconies. The lower section is the fishermen's quarter. A brief walking tour in the Old Town will take you to the historic Parador --once a medieval defense tower and now an atmosphere-laden hotel.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes.
