Grand-Bourg, Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe

This pretty town is on the coast of Marie-Galante, a low, rolling offshore island of Guadeloupe. It has a 19th Century church and a mile-long beach, Plage de la Feuillère, right near town. There are 106 sugar mills on Marie Galante, and you are still likely to see ox-carts transporting cut cane along the roads to one of them. Visit one of the historic plantations, Habitation Murat or Habitation Roussel-Trianon, for a glimpse of the past, or one of the island’s two rum distilleries for a taste of the present.
