Erewhon sheep station is one of New Zealand's most historic and iconic farms, located in the heart of the South Island high country. Its sheer isolation and magnificent alpine setting is unsurpassed in New Zealand. On this full-day excursion, you'll literally journey to the end of the road -- where few New Zealanders have ventured.
From Timaru, you will travel inland, passing many small farming communities. After a morning snack at Mt Somers you'll enter the high country, passing Lake Clearwater before the splendor of the Rangitata River and Southern Alps opens out in front of you. Along the way you will see Mt Sunday, where some scenes from Lord of the Rings were filmed.
Upon arrival at Erewhon Station, a 35,000-acre farm, you will receive a warm welcome from the owners. Here, you will be treated to a 20-minute ride in a carriage pulled by a magnificent Clydesdale horse. You will also seeing a working farm demonstration by the horses as well as a sheep shearing demonstration.
A barbecue lunch is served at the farm before it's time to bid farewell to your hosts and return to Timaru.
Please note:
Wear warm layered clothing as it can be cool in the high country.
