Phillip Island's westernmost point is the Summerland Peninsula -- a magnificent headland whose most endearing resident is the Australian fur seal. An agile swimmer with small ears, large eyes and sharp teeth, the Australian fur seal has a streamlined shape and strong flippers. By the early 18th century, the seal was almost extinct but, today, 16,000 fur seals call this rugged area home.
Board a boat and head out into the crystalline waters of Bass Strait, which separates Tasmania from the Australian mainland.
This two-hour eco-cruise affords an up-close look at Australia's largest fur seal colony, gliding within feet of thousands of seals frolicking in the water and sunning themselves on the rocks.
Playful dolphins have been known to join in the fun, sometimes cruising alongside the boat and, if you're visiting in January, you'll be able to observe fur seal pups taking their first swimming lessons.
Please note: Wear warm, layered, comfortable clothing and non-skid shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen.
