Visit Mt Fuji -- perhaps the most iconic landmark of Japan. Almost perfectly conical, Fuji is Japan's tallest mountain. In 2013, Mt Fuji was designated a "sacred place and source of artistic inspiration" and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take in spectacular views (weather permitting) of Mt Fuji and the town of Fujinomiya from the second station observation level.
Continue to Shiraito Waterfall to watch the water cascading some 65 feet like so many threads of silk.
A traditional lunch of local delicacies is served nearby.
Another short motorcoach ride brings you to the Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine, located in the southwestern foothills of Mt Fuji. Originally built to offer protection from volcanic eruptions, the shrine was one of the grandest in its heyday, which was in the early 1600s. The shrine has been hit by several earthquakes, damaging its structure; so, today, only the inner and outer shrines remain along with the tower gate. Climbers often stop here to pray before ascending the mountain.
The Mt Fuji World Heritage Center draws you in for a closer introduction to the mountain through fantastic interpretive displays. The architecture of this building alone is worth the visit.
At the end of this day filled with quintessential images of Japan, relax on the ride back to the port.
