Senggigi is clustered on the verdant shore just behind a blindingly white curve of beach on Bali’s smaller neighbor island of Lombok. Lombok is dominated by looming Mount Rinjani, the second tallest volcano in Indonesia. It is still an active volcano with a lake in its crater and a “new mountain” forming in the lake from recent eruptions. A number of popular touring options from Senggigi include cultural visits to various weaving and handicraft villages, hikes to photogenic waterfalls and boat rides to the fascinating Gilli Islands just offshore. Another option is simply a scenic drive along the coast road with dramatic views, glimpses of quiet kampongs and agricultural activities, vivid green rice fields and lush forests, possibly including a visit to the Pura Batu Bolong Hindu temple set on a headland nearby. For short jaunts, Lombok is served by a large number of horse-drawn carts that make an inexpensive and fun option.
