Your day of discovery begins with a short drive through Kushiro, known as "the Misty City."
At Kushiro Crane Natural Park, admire the coastal scenery and the lush wetlands. The Japanese red-crested crane is designated a Special Natural Living Treasure. These strikingly beautiful birds have been brought back from near-extinction and are given free rein in this nature park dedicated to their preservation.
The Kushiro Shitsugen (Wetlands) Wildlife Center offers a chance to explore the mysteries of the wetlands while learning about its diverse wildlife. The exhibition facility features panels and dioramas about endangered wildlife such as Blakiston's fish owl and red-crowned cranes, as well as wetland ecosystems and their conservation.
Kushiro Shitsugen National Park is the largest wetlands area in Japan. Its 61,000 acres are populated by more than 2,000 species of flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for Hokkaido deer, red-crested cranes, grassland birds, and wildflowers.
The Kushiro City Museum is home to the skeleton of a huge mammoth, which greets you as you enter this impressively designed building. The collection also includes exhibits on the nature and history of the Kushiro area and the cultural history of the Ainu people.
