Embark on a tour highlighting the most important sights of Hiroshima, where poignant visits to the Peace Memorial Park and Atomic Bomb Dome intertwine with the vibrant energy of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Itsukushima Shrine, providing a profound exploration of history, culture, and natural beauty.
Reputed to be the home of the gods, Miyajima Island is your first destination today. You will have approximately 1.5 hours to enjoy the delights of this sacred place on your own. Riding by ferry across Hiroshima Bay, you'll see the UNESCO World Heritage Site Itsukushima Shrine. The vermillion lacquered shrine contrasts brightly with the dark water that surrounds it. Take in the excellent views of the giant Torii gate (a gate between the spirit and human worlds). Browse for souvenirs along the main arcade, where traditional wood-turned items are an island specialty.
Head back to Hiroshima in time for lunch at a local restaurant. Relax and refuel before your afternoon adventures.
The Atomic Bomb Dome is an instantly-recognizable symbol of peace. It's here at Peace Memorial Park, dedicated to the victims of the first Atomic bomb attack, that you will explore the moving and sometimes harrowing Museum. The museum portrays the devastating impact of the bomb, showcasing artifacts and personal stories of those who survived, as well as the events leading up to and after the bombing. The most emotive tribute here is the Children's Peace Monument, where thousands of colorful cranes belie the soulful tale behind them.
You'll also explore the Shukkeien Gardens, built in 1620 and modeled after a landscape in Hangzhou, China. The name means "shrunken scenery gardens" -- highly appropriate for this miniature landscape of forests, valleys and mountains. Stroll pathways and over bridges to a pond with an oasis of tea houses and waterfalls.
Please note:
Tour requires approximately two hours of walking. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The Museum exhibits sensitive material, including some very graphic images and displays; photography is not permitted. Expect crowding at the museum. Tour sequence may vary. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Terrain includes steps and uneven surfaces. Bring local currency, as some vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. The ferry operates weather permitting. Some parts of Itsukushima Shrine will be under the construction so it might spoil the scenery.
