Kinabalu Park on the northern end of the island of Borneo was inscribed in 2000. Mount Kinabalu (4,095 m), is the highest peak between the Himalayas and New Guinea. The site has been designated as a Centre of Plant Diversity for Southeast Asia. Its very wide range of habitats is exceptionally rich in species of flora from the Himalayas, China, Australia, Malaysia, as well as pan-tropical flora.
The jagged granite peaks of Mt Kinabalu (13,400 feet) towers above one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kinabalu Park is a natural wonder that offers day visitors a glimpse into the fascinating world of plant life within the park. Enjoy a short trail walk through oak and chestnut rain forests at the park headquarters. You'll view some of the noteworthy native flora, including ground orchids, some plants for medicinal use, and ferns that are found along the trails as you trek through the Mountain Garden. On a clear day, the mountain is quite spectacular, as you can see the jagged peaks towering above. You will cross the Crocker Range, passing through rustic countryside. Keep an eye out for the native Dusun people along the way.
Please note: The weather in the mountains is relatively cool; bring a jacket.
