Leaving the ship in a zodiac, enjoy a short transfer to the beautiful settlement of Qassiarsuk.
Arriving at the small gangway begin an independent exploration of Qassiarsuk. Local guides will be stationed throughout the settlement to provide information and entertain you with tales of the Vikings.
Erik the Red, one of the most well-known Norse explorers and the person believed to have founded the first farming settlement in Greenland in 985, built an estate in Qassiarsuk, then called Brattahlid. Many of these buildings are still visible today.
Qassiarsuk was later founded again in 1924 as a sheep farming settlement which is still the main economy in contrast to most other settlements which are based on fishing. Sheep farmers today cultivate the same fields, and let their animals graze the same land that the Norsemen used towards the end of the 9th century.
Tourism has more recently become a main industry being known as one of the places in South Greenland with the best-preserved Norse ruins and reconstruction of Thorhildur’s first Christian church built on the North American continent.
Venture ashore and learn more about the Norsemen and the history of South Greenland
