Combine Klawock Highlights with the Prince of Whales Whale and Marine Mammals Cruise for a well-rounded experience on land and water.
Begin at the Klawock tender dock and pick your seat in a purpose-built wildlife-viewing boat. Using the latest reports, your wildlife guide will take you to the most active locations to ensure wildlife sighting throughout the summer season. Hot beverages including coffee, tea and hot cocoa are included.
Along the whale you’ll do some whale watching. Humpback whales come to Klawock’s waters to feed on plankton, herring, and salmon fry for the Alaska summer. Reliant on the movement of the food source, the humpbacks move around the ocean islands surrounding the port. Their majestic presence is unforgettable and the experience will be educational, too.
You’ll also spot sea otter habitats. Sea otter groups, known as rafts, drift along with the movement of the tide. Using seaweed beds for protection and as resting spots, these areas make ideal locations for iconic Otter photos. While they look cute and cuddly, learn how sea otter populations dramatically affect other sea life habitats in Alaska.
Your continues back in Klawock where you will reach beyond the bus window and embrace the rich culture and history that has sustained the people of Klawock for more than 10,000 year. A gllimpse into how the past and present intersect as you walk along the Klawock River trail. Home to Klawock Heenya’s earliest settlement, today the Klawock River is renowned for Alaska’s best year-round river fishing. Follow the river bank on this easy walking trail, as towering trees and the soothing melody of the river accompany your scenic exploration of the flora and fauna.
Reboard your bus and continue along to the Klawock Heenya Carving Shed. Here the artistry and heritage of totem pole carving come to life as you visit the active workshop of master formline artist Jon Rowan and the training grounds for Klawock’s next generation of totem carvers at the carving shed. This carving shed is a testament to the community’s dedication to preserving and sharing traditional craftsmanship, where you will learn how to select the right tree, details about the traditional and modern carving techniques, and how the community of Klawock maintains some of the oldest totem poles in Alaska while continuing to add new poles to their totem history.
Finally, head to Klawock Totem Park and stand among Klawock’s totem towers. With twenty-one unique pieces of formline art, this is the largest collection of totems in Alaska including story, healing, and totem poles of shame. Your local guide will share the meaning of these incredible monuments that represent different Tlingit tribes from around Southeast Alaska and their connection with Klawock.
Please Note: Dress in layers for warmth and bring rain jacket and gloves. Tour order may vary. A box lunch is provided mid-way during the tour.
