Lace up your walking shoes for a 2 1/2-hour tour that begins at the pier and heads into St. Helier for a picture-perfect day.
St. Helier, Jersey’s capital, is the island’s main retail district and home to a third of Jersey’s population. The area was favored by wealthy fisherman, privateers and traders in the early 19th century and grew when they set up permanent homes and established it as the island’s administrative center. The bulk of the architecture you will see on your walk reflects the Regency, Victorian and Modern styles popular at the time of St. Helier’s growth.
Walk on the north quay of the harbor toward Liberation Square, passing the Steam Clock Ariadne. The clock is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest steam clock.
Continue on to Liberation Square, officially opened by Prince Charles in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of Jersey's liberation from Nazi occupation during WWII.
To the north of the square stands the Pomme D’Or Hotel, which has the historic distinction of being used by the Nazis as their headquarters during the occupation. Today it stands as a fine, luxury hotel.
A statue of George II presides over Royal Square, the site of the last land battle to be fought on British soil, the Battle of Jersey in 1781.
A wide balcony marks the 17th century Corn Exchange building, now the Registry Office where marriages are performed.
Decorative gates herald the entrance to the present-day marketplace. A lovely fountain stands in the center, surrounded by street vendors and stalls. You’ll have free time to stroll through this area. Here you will also find a sundial designed by Elias Le Gros, a local mapmaker, mathematician and teacher from the time of George Ill.
Your walk will take you through Parade Gardens, see the statue of General Don, Governor of Jersey during the Napoleonic War and the French Imperial-style St. Helier Town Hall.
Your roundtrip leisurely walking tour concludes back at the pier.
Please note: Guests will have approximately 20 minutes of free time at the market. Terrain will be flat and cobbled in most places, it is recommended to wear flat soled shoes and bring a wind and waterproof outer shell is recommended for any diverse weather conditions.
