Drive west to Sagres, passing numerous small villages whose whitewashed houses sport decorative chimney pots.
You will stop for photos at the beautiful sheltered port of Sagres. Then, pass the fortress built to defend against pirate attacks.
Continue to the wild headland of Cape St Vincent. Here, 200-foot-tall cliffs face off against the marauding Atlantic Ocean at the southwesternmost point of Europe.
Next, you'll drive to Lagos and admire the turquoise waters and rock sculptures at Ponta da Piedade. This point offers excellent views over the Bay of Lagos, with Portimão visible in the distance. Lagos was the departure port of the earliest Portuguese Caravels. You will see the statues of King Sebastien and Prince Henry the Navigator, and the arcades where slaves were first auctioned in Europe. Lagos was the capital of the Algarve until 1756. Today, it has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
You will visit the Baroque Church of Saint Anthony before you head back to Portimão .
Please note: The chapel in Lagos is closed on Mondays; you will visit the exterior visit only. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
