Leaving the university town of Galway behind, you'll embark on a panoramic drive through County Galway. Pass through Oughterard and Maam before arriving in the town of Cong, in neighboring County Mayo.
The town of Cong is home to the majestic remains of Cong Abbey, founded in the 12th century by Turlough O'Connor, King of Connaught and High King of Ireland. However, Cong is best known for the movie The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. Scenes from the movie were filmed in the village and in the grounds of Ashford Castle on the village outskirts.
Memorabilia from various scenes is featured in the nearby Cottage Museum, designed as an exact replica of the cottage that featured in the movie. Enjoy the beauty of Cong as it is today and imagine how it was when the film was made more than 50 years ago. You can still see Dannagher's farmhouse, the Reverend Playfair's home (still inhabited and located on the grounds of Ashford Castle) and, of course, the most famous landmark of all -- Pat Cohan's Bar, located in the village.
Cong is also home to the magnificent Ashford Castle Hotel. Take advantage of some free time to explore the grounds of this beautiful estate and enjoy scones and tea or coffee before you return to the ship in Galway.
