A short coach ride from the port brings you to the Castle of Bodrum. The magnificent sun-bleached stones used to build the castle were plundered from the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. The Knights of Rhodes tore down this magnificent tomb -- one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Visit the Sunken Boat Museum, whose artifacts were found underwater and date from the Bronze Age through the Middle Ages. Remnants of cargo from a 13th-century BC Syrian trade ship are on display. You'll also visit the Carian Princess section to see a beautiful gold tiara.
From the museum, it's just a short drive to the Myndos Gate, through which Alexander the Great entered the ancient city of Halicarnassus in 334 BC.
Refreshments are served at a fine local hotel with a spectacular view of Bodrum Bay.
Please note: Wear comfortable non-skid walking shoes. Bodrum Castle has many steps that have been worn smooth over time; these can be slippery.
