Beautiful Bilbão, full of character and a sassy self-appreciation, was initially founded by the Romans, who mostly appreciated the nearby iron ore deposits. Nowadays, this modern city's bent for avant-garde architecture (such as the ultra-modern Guggenheim Museum) contrasts sharply with its medieval heart.
A panoramic drive takes you past the Gardens of Albia, the Church of San Vicente and the Palace of Chavarri, all within the modern new city.
Then, you'll discover the Old Town – the nucleus of this industrial port city. Narrow streets are lined with Renaissance, Baroque and Modernist buildings and you'll stroll past the Cathedral of Santiago, the Gothic Church of San Anton, and the Plaza Nueva (New Square).
Stop at a local restaurant to taste the Basque region's unique twist on Spanish tapas. These are small appetizers that emphasize local ingredients, flavors, and specialties. The result is a fresh, seasonal, mouthwatering take on tradition.
Continue along and take photos from the Artxanda viewpoint high above town. This brilliant spot is serviced by road and by funicular.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes.
