Never witnessed a live fish auction before? You're in for a fascinating morning at the Akashiura port auction, held when the fishing fleets arrive with the daily catch. Purchasers buy the fish from a huge tank and, interestingly, this facility is said to have the largest number of female workers in Japan. Stand next to the buyers as they furiously bid at auction amid a mind-boggling flurry of activity as live fish change hands and fishermen work to auction their catch. And keep your hands in your pockets so you don't suddenly find yourself the proud owner of 20 live blowfish.
Afterward, walk to a nearby sushi restaurant and taste delicious fish directly from Akashi.
A drive into the mountains brings you to Miki -- the oldest forge town in Japan. Here, you'll meet Mr Tanaka -- the fourth CEO of Kazuyuki Tanaka Knife Manufacturing and the only craftsman in the city to forge kitchen knives manually. He allows only a select few to visit his workshop -- this truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity arranged by Seabourn for you. Watch him hammer his knives from red-hot steel right in front of you. Please note:
Participants must be able to walk and stand for extended periods. The knife workshop is a working environment with limited standing room; it may feel a little crowded. Terrain includes many steps. The fish auction viewing will be about 10 minutes. You may get splashed with seawater from the tank at the market. The sushi restaurant only serves raw fish sushi; no menu substitutions can be made.
