Discover the poignant history of Okinawa during the Second World War.
The Battle of Okinawa, a harrowing conflict spanning over 90 days between Allied and Japanese forces, left a devastating impact on the island. Delve into the events that unfolded during this tumultuous period as you visit the Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters. Descend 105 steps into the sunless labyrinth of tunnels, bearing witness to the stark conditions where soldiers lived, fought, and perished.
Venture into the Himeyuri Peace Museum, a tribute to the 222 young school girls who bravely served during the war. Mobilized as a nursing unit, they carried their school bags, determined not to let their studies falter, only to find themselves thrust onto the front lines, performing surgeries and burying the dead. Their stories are poignantly depicted through personal effects and collected memoirs.
Further delve into the tragic legacy of the Battle of Okinawa at the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum. From the island's annexation into Japan to the American post-war occupation, explore the military history that shaped Okinawa's destiny. Reflect on the staggering toll of 240,734 lives lost, whether due to disease, starvation, enemy fire, or suicide, as you wander through the serene surroundings of Peace Memorial Park.
Join us on a journey of remembrance and contemplation as we pay tribute to the resilience and sacrifices endured during this pivotal moment in Okinawa's history.
