Go beyond the ordinary and discover the vast Kushiro Wetlands from several distinct vantage points. A scenic drive brings you to Japan's largest marshland and National Park. This huge marshland is home to 2,000 spectacular varieties of plants and animals with an overall area of 61,000 acres. It was the first Japanese marshland to be registered under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
Begin your day with canoe experience along the meandering river running through the Kushiro Wetlands – a calm tranquil experience that brings you up close to the flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for Hokkaido deer and white-tailed sea eagles. Summertime brings an abundance of fragrant blossoms. In cooler months, the Japanese crane – designated a Special Natural Monument – makes its home here.
Continue on with a guided nature walk uphill to the impressive viewing deck at Hosooka Observatory. From this expansive observatory, you'll absorb glorious views of the area's celebrated scenery – a seasonal kaleidoscope. 600 types of plants and more than 100 species of birds (most notably the red-crowned Japanese crane) flourish here. From the observation platform's high vantage point, gain a deeper understanding of the geographical and geological characteristics of the wetlands. Admire the volcanic Akan mountain range on the horizon if the weather permits.
Relax on the motor coach ride back to port.
Please note:
Dress in layers and wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring a jacket or windbreaker. In case of bad weather, Kushiro Crane Natural Park, Washo Market and Kushiro Marshland observation point will substitute the canoe experience. Paddling the canoe is not required. For the canoe experience, the group will be divided into small groups of 3-6 guests. No guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day, as weather and atmospheric conditions vary and are beyond the tour operator’s control. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Bring local currency (yen) for purchases as few stores accept credit cards. Tour order may vary. Traffic can be unpredictable, especially during public holidays. The driver will do his/her best to keep moving safely. Your patience is greatly appreciated. Delays occasionally extend tour duration. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. Participants who are taller than 190cm and/or weigh more than 220 pounds may not be able to participate.
