Ishigaki Island invites you to explore its craft studios and stunning natural beauty. You'll first visit Banna Park. This vast nature reserve, located just a couple of miles north of Ishigaki City, is wrapped around a hill. It is divided into four zones and includes a skyline area, all of which are linked by paths and roads.
Then discover one of the most scenic locations in Japan -- Kabira Bay – given a top rating in the Michelin Green Guide for its beautiful emerald-colored water and white-sand beach. The black pearls from Kabira Bay are quite famous. A souvenir outlet here offers a limited number of Japanese-made black pearl products, difficult to find in other places.
At the Minsa Art & Craft Center, learn all about Okinawa's local textile called Minsa. Shop here for bags and tapestries and browse in the small museum, which displays traditional and modern clothing.
You will stop by the Ishigaki Pottery Studio & Gallery to see some fine examples of Yutekitenmoku -- a type of pottery characterized by a pattern of irregular dots on a dark surface. The lustrous effect is often described as oil drops on water or glittering stars in the night sky. Browse in the gift shop and purchase ceramics decorated with natural Okinawa ocean-colored glass.
Following your visit, return to the pier.
Please note:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring local currency, as some vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Photography is not allowed at the museum at the Minsa Art Craft Center. Tour sequence may vary. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Traffic can be unpredictable; your patience is greatly appreciated if a delay extends the tour duration.
