This 90-minute walking tour is your portal to the industrious world of Kodiak Harbor, where the onlookers are bald eagles, harbor seals, Steller sea lions and, today, you!
Your guide is a current or former fisherman with years of Alaska commercial fishing experience and a wealth of knowledge about this dangerous industry. Step into this rough-and-ready working world with an introduction to the boats, the gear, and the lives of commercial fishermen. Hear life-and-death stories that highlight the perilous nature of the work and meet fishermen making crab pots, nets and hooks ready for the next fishing trip. Check out the features of a cold-water immersion survival suit, designed to prolong survivability in the event of an abandon-ship incident in these icy waters.
No trip to Kodiak is complete without some discussion around the Great Alaskan Earthquake and the resulting tsunami of 1964 that destroyed much of the town of Kodiak and its entire fishing fleet.
Please note: The tour begins at the ship and ends at the small boat harbor in downtown Kodiak. Participants must be physically fit and able to walk for 90 minutes. Distance covered is about 1.5 miles over city streets and on harbor floats. Terrain includes unpaved and uneven surfaces, steep inclines, and marine ramps. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Minimum height is 4 feet. Minimum age is 10 years.
