The yachting center of Travemunde on the Baltic coast of Germany is an attractive port that offers access to other coastal ports such as Rostock, as well as the Hanseatic UNESCO World Heritage city of Lubeck. Lubeck has an air of longstanding prosperity that stems from its charter membership in the Hanseatic League, the medieval trans-European guild that invented such business innovations as bank checks. Largely built f dark, glossy brick, the town’s iconic structures are the twin-towered Holstentor city gate, the 13th century City Hall and the Marienkirche which influenced church design around the world. No visit to Lubeck is complete without picking up a selection of brightly colored and fancifully shaped sweets of marzipan, a local specialty since the Middle Ages.
