Embark on a scenic drive from Mossel Bay to George, tracing the coastal road toward the majestic Outeniqua Mountains. Along the way, relish panoramic views of the renowned Garden Route coastline from the comfort of your coach.
Upon reaching George, your adventure takes an inland turn, leading you into the heart of the Outeniqua Mountains. Here, the rugged coastal terrain transforms into the starkly beautiful Karoo region, characterized by its arid climate and breathtaking vistas. Traverse the scenic Outeniqua Pass—a route constructed between 1943 and 1951, replacing the Montagu Pass as the primary connection from George to the interior. The pass derives its name from the Hottentot tribe that once inhabited the area.
Crossing the Outeniqua Mountains, you’ll arrive in Oudtshoorn, the principal town of the Little Karoo. The Klein Karoo, nestled in a fertile valley between the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges, originated as a settlement along the meandering Grobbelaars Rivers. Here, abundant crops like lucerne, tobacco, fruit, grapes, and grains thrive thanks to fertile soil and ample water.
Next, venture to a local working ostrich farm. Witness large flocks of ostriches at various stages of development in the surrounding fields. Your guided tour will delve into every aspect of ostrich farming, from breeding to rearing. Begin at the breeding camp, where you’ll encounter ostrich eggs and learn about the initial stages of their life cycle. For an added thrill, enjoy a guided tractor ride through the farm, discovering more about these captivating creatures. Afterward, savor a sumptuous lunch, and don’t miss the opportunity to shop for souvenirs on-site.
As the day winds down, return to Mossel Bay via the scenic Robinson Pass. The sun-scorched plains of the Little Karoo gradually give way to the lush greenery of the Garden Route forests.
