Discover a historical Japanese temple and shrine with an approximately 2.5-hour walking tour in the great outdoors.
Board a comfortable motorcoach and enjoy a scenic one-hour panoramic drive to Daisen, once home to 100 temples, thousands of soldier monks, and a centuries-old tradition of religious asceticism.
The Chumonindani Picnic Site offers true serenity. Long ago, it was the site of a monk's compound, but today, you can stroll along well-maintained paths in the shade of the deciduous broad-leaf forest.
The main hall of Daisenji Buddhist Temple was founded about 1,300 years ago for a form of mountain asceticism called Shugendo.
Next, walk about 820 yards to the Ogamiyama Shrine, among the most impressive examples of Gongen-zukuri-style buildings in Japan. Its distinctive features include a natural flagstone path running between beeches and Japanese cedars. This style of architecture flourished after the Momoyama Period, yet the shrine's origin remains shrouded in mystery.
Please note:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking. Terrain includes inclines, unpaved, rough walking tracks, and many steps. Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Tour sequence may vary. The route may be slippy after rain and is subject to change. Photography is not allowed at the Ogamiyama Shrine. The main deity of Ogamiyama Shrine is not visible to the public. In the spring season, snow may still remain.
