Today's great adventure begins at the pier as you board a larger-than-life modified super-truck.
Head out to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Thingvellir, where you will stop among the landscape of Iceland's early parliament. This is the place where two tectonic plates meet. You can clearly see the rift between the plates.
Delving into the hinterland, you'll drive along the dramatic Cold Valley to Langjokull Glacier. Langjokull (Long Glacier) is 4,460 feet long and covers an area of about 366 square miles about 4,000 feet above sea level.
Upon arrival at the glacier, it's all action. Your expert driver will take your super-truck adventure over the ice and snow to the Ice Cave -- a new attraction located on the flanks of Iceland's second-largest glacier. The Ice Cave is a man-made cave that stretches deep into the glacier and consists of a series of tunnels and caves carved through solid glacial ice. There is also an ice chapel and an ice bar. Crevasses that pull the glacier apart, along with sunlight penetrating the packed ice, are among the natural wonders you'll see. This cave-like tunnel leads into the icy underground and, as the ice gets older, the color changes from white to a deep blue. The Ice Cave is located about 100 feet below the glacier's surface and stretches approximately 800 feet in length. During your guided glacier visit, listen to an introduction to glaciology and learn about the effect climate change has on glaciers. The cave also provides glaciologists, meteorologists and other scientists with an opportunity to study the glacier in a new way.
Head back to the woodlands of Húsafell. A light buffet lunch is served at Husafell Bistro.
You'll want to admire the nearby Hraunfoss and Barnafoss waterfalls -- two of Iceland's most picturesque cascades. The ride back to Reykjavík will take you through the Hvalfjordur Tunnel, along the coastline, and back to the pier.
Please note: Minimum age is 8 years. Ride will be bumpy. Pregnant women and guests with back or neck conditions are not allowed to participate. Guests who are prone to motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication. The vehicles ride in a convoy formation; commentary may be provided through the vehicle's radio system. Distance traveled and time on the glacier depends on weather and snow conditions. Views are weather permitting. The gravel road leading from Thingvellir to Langjokull glacier is sometimes closed at the beginning of June. Tour operates subject to meeting a minimum number of participants. This is not a self-drive tour. The tunnel under a glacier is cold. Water drips from above and there will be wet puddles. Wear sturdy, waterproof non-skid shoes. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Jeans and other cotton clothing are not suitable. Fleece and wool are appropriate. Outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf. Warm overalls can be provided by the tour operator along with waterproof boots (to wear over your shoes).
