Leave Gothenburg for a drive north along the Swedish west coast, passing the small, historical town of Kungälv. The impressive ruins of Bohus Fortress date back to the 14th century.
Drive through the town of Stenungsund and over to the island of Tjörn -- a large island surrounded by many smaller islands, west of the forested mainland. The islands are connected by impressive bridges. You'll stop for photos at the Tjörn Bridge stretching across the Askerö Fjord.
Visit the old fishing village of Klädesholmen, where the fish processing industry was founded in the 19th century. Today it boasts eight modern herring canning factories. Take a guided walk through this charming village.
Next you'll get acquainted with the main town of Skärhamn -- a vibrant and important shipping center -- where the shipping industry employs more than 2,000 people.
Taste the area's famous herring at a local café; then you will have some free time in Skärhamn to explore on your own.
