Perched 2,300 feet above sea level, Montserrat is home to one of the greatest Benedictine monastic complexes of the Middle Ages. You will have approx. 90 minutes to explore this amazing set of buildings, including the stunning Montserrat Basilica. A superb example of Roman architecture, the basilica is decorated with statues of Christ and the 12 Apostles. The interior is renowned for its gilded wooden sculpture of Catalonia's patron saint La Moreneta, also known as the 'Black Madonna'. Pay homage to the silver altar dedicated to the Virgin or visit the museum, which boasts works of art by El Greco, Dali and Picasso. Then stroll the plaza, browsing the many shops, before enjoying lunch in a local restaurant.
Drive through the lush Catalonian countryside rich with vineyards and olive, almond and hazelnut orchards to Sant Sadurni d'Anoia, the nexus of Catalonia's wine industry, where you'll visit a modernist style winery for a cava tasting. Codorníu Cellar has a family history of winemaking dating back to the 16th century. It is the oldest family business in Spain and one of the oldest in the world.
Visit the largest underground cellar in Europe by small train and enjoy a tasting of 2 types of Codorniu cava. Return to Tarragona at the end of an exhilarating day.
