Historic Center of Rome, the Properties of the Holy See in that City Enjoying Extraterritorial Rights & San Paolo Fuori le Mura & Vatican City UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Drive to the heart of Rome, passing St Paul's Basilica, the Pyramid of Caius Cestius, Circus Maximus and stopping at the Trevi Fountain, all included in a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Walk to (Venice Square), along Imperial Forum Avenue and then stop for a view over the Roman Forum. On the far side, you can see the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine.
After lunch, you will cross the River Tiber to the UNESCO World Heritage site Vatican State and step through the embrace of Bernini's spectacular colonnade to the vast expanse of St Peter's Square.
A sovereign state within the Italian Republic, the Vatican has been completely independent since 1929, and has its own radio station, newspaper, stamps, currency, railroad station and diplomatic representation. Not only is the Vatican a rich spiritual center, it is also rich in priceless treasures. More than 1,000 rooms and galleries, known collectively as the Vatican Museums, contain amazing treasures of art collected by the Popes over the centuries.
Highlights include the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel with its world-famous frescoed ceiling, and Michelangelo's dramatic masterpiece, The Last Judgment.
Visit the Cabinet of the Masks. This constitutes an exclusive area of the galleries, whose name comes from the beautiful Roman mosaics depicting masks that adorn its floor.
Along with tiled mosaic, paintings and stucco that decorate this room, the Cabinet of Masks also features several works of sculpture.
Please note: In preparation for the 2025 Jubilee, the restoration work has begun on the ‘Baldacchino’ over the main altar of St. Peter’s Basilica, hiding Bernini’s Baldachin. This is expected to last until 2025.
