Set out on this excursion that is ideal both for photography enthusiasts and for those who just want to bring home the best possible holiday snaps. A local photographer will mentor you, offering practical hints on framing the best shots of the fascinating architectural features you will see today.
Driving northward from Monemvasia towards the village of Sparta, you will come upon the photogenic ruins of the ancient city of Mystras. Its strategic location on the steep slopes of Mount Taygetos and its ribust city walls kept enemies at bay and inspired William II to erect a citadel here in 1249. The city had two entrances -- the Monovasia gate and the Anaplon gate -- which were connected by a road that bisected the city. The northern part of town was home to nobility; the southern part was home to the ordinary folks. Stopping above the site, take some great photos of marvelous Mystras below. It is still considered Greece's best-preserved Byzantine city.
Your walking tour commences in Mystras, where you will gain great insight regarding its impressive churches, restored palaces, vaulted alleys, and city walls. Take time to admire the magnificent frescoadorned churches, such as Aghios Dimitrios, the Evangelistria and the Pantanassa, or simply stroll through Mystras -- now a ghostly city virtually defined by its rich history. For the very adventurous and physically fit, there is the option of climbing to the top of the Kastro -- a 13th-century castle -- where you will be treated to one of the most stunning panoramas in Mystras and have a chance to take photos.
Returning to the coast, visit the small island of Monemvasia -- one of Greece's best-kept secrets. The medieval town was carved from a sea rock and is only accessed by a single manmade causeway. As you walk through the narrow castle gate, you'll be transported to a culturally rich bygone era. Follow your guide along the well-trod cobblestone main street to the very heart of the citadel.
Explore Monemvasia's photogenic, 13th-century Christ Elkomenos Cathedral, an impressive barrel-vaulted nave, and aisles, and houses an ancient masterpiece icon from the 14th century. Across the square inside the photographically inspiring 16th-century Turkish Mosque is the Archaeological Museum. Artifacts found within the fortress walls are on display here, including architectural sculptures and ceramic objects from the Early Christian period up to Byzantine times.
Enjoy a refreshment at one of the local coffee shops before returning to the tender station.
Please note: Wear comfortable non-skid walking shoes. Bring your camera.
