"The capital of Malta is inextricably linked to the history of the military and charitable Order of St John of Jerusalem. It was ruled successively by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and the Order of the Knights of St John. Valletta's 320 monuments, all within an area of 55 ha, make it one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world."
Acquaint yourself with two great capitals -- both rich in architectural gems. Your guide will walk you through both of these beautiful locations highlighting the main points of interest in each.
A scenic drive takes you inland to Mdina --the island's former capital and one of the few great architectural treasures of Malta that did not result from the activities of the Knights of St John. This is the oldest city on the island, dating back to pre-historic times, and the word Mdina derives from the Arabic word medina which simply means 'city'. You will also have some free time to roam and explore on your own.
Continue to Valletta, named after Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valletta, who inspired the Knights of St John and led the Maltese to victory during the siege of 1565. Visit the monumental St John's Co-Cathedral, and enjoy a walking tour past landmarks that include the Grand Master's Palace, the ruins of the Royal Opera House and Our Lady of Victories Church.
Cap it all off with great harbor views from the upper Barrakka Gardens.
You will also have some free time to enjoy Valletta at your own pace before returning to the ship.
Please note: Modest attire is required; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered. Shorts and short skirts are not allowed. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water. St John's Co-Cathedral is closed on Saturday afternoons, Sundays and public holidays; a visit to the National Museum of Archaeology will be substituted.
